Why our local elections are important.
Everyone gets excited about presidential elections, but who has more control over your day-to-day life: your mayor or president? Did you know that voter turnout in local elections in Texas often runs in the single digits? For example, earlier this month, voter turnout for municipal elections in Dallas County hovered just under 9%.
Cities and counties are responsible for most of the roads we drive on, the water we drink, and our trash pick-up. And even if you don’t have kids in school, our school boards are making the policy to educate the next generation of workers – workers we hope will fund our social security checks! So why don’t we care as much about who represents us locally?
So next time there is a city, county, or school board race on your ballot, think twice before you decide to sit that election out!
