In leadership, business, and community life, one of the most powerful things you can do is show up. Presence signals commitment. Consistency builds trust. Intentionality creates influence. Simply put: showing up changes outcomes.

This summer, the Texas legislature gave us a dramatic example of the power of showing up…or not. Governor Greg Abbott called a special session to advance a mid-decade redistricting plan, among other statewide priorities. In response, more than 50 House Democrats left the state, breaking quorum and halting the process. By choosing not to show up, the Democrats stopped the legislature in its tracks.

It’s a reminder that presence (or in this case, the lack thereof) is never neutral. Your decisions about when and how to show up have consequences and send a message to the people you lead and serve.

Here’s how to use the power of showing up in your world:

  • Be Visible. Your presence matters in meetings, conversations, and community moments.
  • Be Consistent. Sporadic engagement doesn’t build momentum; steady commitment does.
  • Be intentional. Show up with purpose, whether it’s to inform, inspire, or influence.

In the end, influence isn’t just about having a seat at the table, it’s about choosing when, where, and how you show up. Use that choice wisely, and your presence will carry real power.
